As soon as Wudu came to live here, he spent the next six months hammering away for eight hours a day.When I took the liberty of asking him how much longer this would go on, he told me he had to bring the shop's wiring up to code. Now, I realize he considers himself intellectually superior to everyone else, but expecting me to swallow the idea that it takes months to fix some wires seems a bit much.
In fact, it wasn’t about wires at all; it was about demolishing the floor and creating a large trapdoor to secure access to the cellar below. And how did he transform the basement? First of all, he installed a reinforced security door. We are the ones accused of having prejudices against Romanians, but in reality, they are the ones taking precautions against us because, with these Italians, you never know better to be suspicious.
